Newborn Chicks

My friend teaches sixth grade science and has had 20+ eggs in an incubator in her classroom for a month. All 20 chicks were born on Friday, when her students had off school, and my friend had to bring them home with her over the weekend. You could hear all of them peeping from far away. They were really fun to watch, a fascinating group dynamic.

Here they are on Friday night, on their first day on earth, outside their shells.

I work part-time for a scholarship organization and this past Saturday we had a big event for a lot of 7th graders from around the city. My job was to pick up pizza and take photos all day. After a 3 hour competition one team won the entire event. On their way out of the gym I got a kid from the winning team to hold his medal up so I could photograph it. I took about 300 photos that day but this was one of my favorites.

Skyline with Olympic Banner

Here’s an example of something I did the other day that was photoshopped too much. I made the banner levels brighten up so that it would stand out. There’s a thin glow around the banners that I think is pretty clearly touched up and also between the two banners doesn’t match the rest of the sky’s coloring. Anyway I’m glad I’m starting to catch these things on my own. It’s a step forward at least.

My cousin Erin, her husband Jay and their baby Cooper.

Do you like this one? I can’t decide if it’s weird to have Erin twice and facing herself and the baby. I do like that if you take your finger you can draw a little circle from Erin’s eyes to Jay’s eyes, back to Erin’s eyes, the baby’s head, and Erin’s hand’s on her stomach.

Crossword Puzzle at lunch

Friends from school working on the Chicago Tribune crossword puzzle during lunch today. Melina’s face is obscured by Nick’s body at left except for her hand.
Does this photo work even though he’s so dark? I like that everyone’s attention is drawn toward the middle of the photograph. And I think it’s a good contemplative shot of Lizz.

Umbrella at bus stop

Took my camera on a trip in the rain last night. Left my house, took a couple of pictures in the pouring rain and then ran to catch the bus. It was stopped at a light so I had a few seconds to take this one. I saw the girl silhouetted with the umbrella and instinctively felt like taking a photo. I cropped a lot of the street out, dimmed the glare of the lights off the street and brought out the bus stop ad behind her. I always admit these things because I fear it’s really obvious.

National Green Museum Awning

Two workers from Awnings USA put the finishing touches on the awning of a highrise apartment building in Old Town to reflect the new National Green Museum. I think the guy on the left is drying the paint job of the guy on the right.

More police

I don’t know why I’m always drawn to photographing the police. I tried photographing this from several angles. This one was interesting, though something’s still off.

Would it have been better if I’d gone from the front so that the action was dead on?

I asked the police officer if I could photograph their car under the El. There was a board loose on the tracks and they had this street blocked off. Still bringing my camera with me everywhere I go.
